Family Fun Activities for Fall 2021

From football tailgates to fall festivals and more, autumn brings so much more than just sweater weather. Clair explores some fun ways to spend time with the kids and enjoy the colorful season this fall!

The fall is here along with all the family fun activities!

We get excited for these fall months for more than one reason. For starters, we love college football. You will find this family tailgating or at a LSU home game during the fall months. That is not the only reason why we are all about these somewhat cooler months.

Picnics outdoors.

This may be an activity you are able to do year-round. That is not the case for all of us in the south. The cooler weather in the fall has us wanting to spend much more time outdoors. We normally cannot even walk outside without having some sort of water activity included. This is not needed during the fall months. Thankful for that!

Picnics outdoors during the fall have many perks. First off, the beautiful fall weather. Then there is the beautiful landscape. We love to look for all the different color of leaves during the fall months. From red to an orange yellow, fall leaves are beautiful to spot.

I cannot forget to mention this last perk that I know everyone down in the south will also be excited about. The decrease in pesky summer bugs, like mosquitos. We are here for all the outdoor fun when those bugs are no longer an issue. Pack up all your family favorite foods in a tote and head outdoors!

Pumpkin patches and all their glory.

Do you all love to visit pumpkin patches? It will always be apart of our family fun activities for the fall. Pumpkin patches are only enjoyed during these fall months, and we are going to make every point to visit at least one. Most of the pumpkin patches here have fun photo booth spots as well as an area designated to games. What kid would not want to stop by a pumpkin patch to pick out a pumpkin and play games?

I love picking out pumpkins from a pumpkin patch. The more different the pumpkin, the even better! My son is always on the lookout for the biggest pumpkin. Last year, my youngest was all about the pumpkins that looked like they had warts. You can look for all these fun and different types of pumpkins at a pumpkin patch.

From the pumpkin patch to the pumpkin carving.

Pumpkin carving is a great family fun activity! Even if you do not want to do the actual carving, you can have your kids paint pumpkins. My kids love to decorate their very own pumpkin. This can be done by adding their own touch with paint, stickers, and even glitter! I have even turned pumpkin carving into a science experiment.

After carving the pumpkin, sprinkle 2 tablespoons of baking soda into the pumpkin. Then pour ¼ cup of vinegar into the pumpkin. Be prepared to watch foam bubble out of all the carvings! You can also add a few drops of food coloring.

Fall scavenger hunts.

Who does not love a good scavenger hunt? A fall scavenger hunt is a lot of fun to do with the entire family. This can be done anywhere. From your own yard to around town, have everyone keep an eye out for anything fall-related. Here are a few ideas to add to your fall scavenger hunt:

  • Pumpkins
  • Orange, red, yellow leaves
  • Scarecrows
  • Spooky decorations
  • Candy corn
  • Acorns

Go camping!

Alright, I know this is like the whole picnic idea. This though would obviously take place at night instead of during the day. For the same reason as the picnic, camping during the fall months is such a great idea. The weather is finally cooler where you can hang out and sleep comfortably. Those pesky summer bugs should not be a problem either.

You can go to a campground or even camp in your very own backyard! My kids love to camp in our own backyard. It is too easy not to do it in our very own backyard. While camping, you can enjoy a bonfire and smores. Both things are a must for family fun activities for the fall. My kids will not skip out on those smores!

Have a costume contest.

Even if you don’t participate in Halloween, a family costume contest is fun. You can have everyone dress up! It would be fun for even the parents to dress up and have the kids vote. Believe me, this is a memory the kids will not forget.

A corn maze and a hayride.

Most places have somewhere you can go to get lost in a corn maze and enjoy a hayride. This may even be apart of a pumpkin patch! These are both fun family activities for the fall and practically scream fall. The corn maze is a great way to stay active outdoors as well.

Try apple cider!

Have you ever tried a taste test or anything of that nature with your kids? The fall months is great for a fun taste test! You can include all the different flavors of fall, like pumpkin and apple cider. You can even have them help you make a recipe with pumpkin or attempt an apple cider! This would be such a fun way to get the family in the kitchen this fall.

For the apple cider, you can show your kids how it is made from start to finish. Cut up the apples ahead of time and store them until everyone is ready. Then have them finish mixing all the ingredients!

A fall craft is a must.

The fall craft is not only fun but can be easy. The options are endless when it comes to kids’ crafts. Most kids will enjoy a great craft activity. One idea for a fall craft is accompanying it to the scavenger hunt. Have them find all things that represent fall. This can be leaves, stick, and acorns. Then have them glue them on a sheet of paper or in a journal. Is that not easy, or what?

Other ideas would be having them paint with red, oranges and yellows to represent the fall. You can even draw out a pumpkin and have them decorate it however they want. This means even designing the way they would want their jack lantern to look.

Fall fun with the family is all about making memories.

The fall months start all the thoughts of being warm and cozy with those you love. There is no better time than the fall months to plan family fun activities. This list is only a starter, and you could probably add your very own ideas to it. Are there any family activities that are a must for your family? Share them with us in the comments!
